Are Neurotoxin Injections Safe?

What You Should Know Before Your First Treatment

If you're considering neurotoxin injections, one of the first questions you may have is: Are they actually safe?

It's an important question—and one you should feel comfortable asking before any aesthetic treatment.

Neurotoxin injections have been used for both medical and cosmetic purposes for many years. When an FDA-approved neurotoxin is appropriately prescribed and administered by a qualified healthcare professional, it is generally considered safe for appropriate patients.

However, neurotoxins are still prescription medications. Understanding the treatment, potential side effects, and importance of choosing a qualified provider is essential before deciding whether injections are right for you.

What Exactly Is a Neurotoxin?

Cosmetic neurotoxins contain botulinum toxin type A, a purified protein that temporarily reduces communication between nerves and targeted muscles.

When injected into carefully selected facial muscles, neurotoxins decrease the muscle contractions responsible for certain expression lines.

This can help soften the appearance of:

  • Forehead lines

  • Frown lines between the eyebrows

  • Crow's feet

  • Other expression-related lines and concerns, depending on the product and treatment plan

The effects are temporary, and normal muscle activity gradually returns as the medication wears off.

Are Neurotoxins FDA-Approved?

Several botulinum toxin products have received FDA approval for specific cosmetic and medical uses.

At TIA Revitalize, we use Xeomin®, a prescription botulinum toxin type A product. Like other neurotoxins, it has specific FDA-approved indications, dosing recommendations, warnings, and precautions.

Not every cosmetic injection site or technique you may see online is necessarily an FDA-approved use. Some treatments may be considered “off-label,” meaning a licensed healthcare provider uses an approved medication in a way that is not specifically included in its FDA-approved labeling.

Your provider should discuss your recommended treatment plan with you so you can make an informed decision.

What Are the Possible Side Effects?

Most patients tolerate cosmetic neurotoxin treatments well, but no medical treatment is completely risk-free.

Temporary reactions can include:

  • Redness, swelling, tenderness, or bruising at the injection site

  • Headache

  • Temporary discomfort

  • Asymmetry

  • Eyelid or eyebrow drooping

  • An unwanted change in facial expression or muscle movement

Rare but potentially serious complications can also occur. Botulinum toxin products carry important safety warnings regarding the possibility of effects spreading beyond the injection area. Symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, speaking, or breathing require immediate medical attention.

This is one reason neurotoxin injections should be treated as a medical procedure—not simply a beauty service.

Who Should Avoid Neurotoxin Injections?

Neurotoxins aren't appropriate for everyone.

Before treatment, your provider should review your medical history, current medications and supplements, allergies, previous reactions to botulinum toxin products, and other factors that could affect treatment.

Be sure to tell your provider if you:

  • Have a history of neuromuscular conditions

  • Have an infection or skin problem near the planned injection site

  • Have previously experienced a reaction to a botulinum toxin product

  • Take medications that affect muscles, nerves, or blood clotting

  • Are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding

  • Have recently received another botulinum toxin treatment

Your consultation is an important part of determining whether treatment is appropriate for you.

Your Injector Matters

When it comes to neurotoxins, who performs your treatment matters just as much as what is being injected.

Facial anatomy is complex. Proper assessment, dosing, injection placement, medication handling, and follow-up all contribute to treatment safety and results.

Before choosing an injector, don't be afraid to ask questions about their credentials, experience, the product being used, expected results, possible complications, and what happens if you have a concern after treatment.

You should know exactly what is being injected into your face.

What About Really Cheap Neurotoxin Specials?

A good deal can be tempting, but price shouldn't be your only consideration when choosing an injectable treatment.

Ask yourself:

Who is treating me? What product are they using? Is it authentic? Is it being stored and prepared appropriately? Have I received a proper medical assessment? And will someone be available if I have a concern afterward?

Your face—and your health—deserve more consideration than simply finding the lowest price.
